Matchmaking In The Real World: How and Why It Works

August 22, 2022

August 31 is National Matchmaking Day. As a figure, Matchmakers often appear in popular culture; think of Fiddler On The Roof's "Matchmaker, Make Me A Match.” This entire month, we are celebrating the magic that matchmakers bring to our lives, and diving into the origin of how matchmaking began.

The History of Matchmaking

Engaging the services of a matchmaker has long been a popular way to arrange matches. One of longest traditions of matchmaking is in Jewish communities in Eastern Europe and Russia, with the height of this tradition occurring in the Middle Ages. There, a professional matchmaker, known as a shadkhan, had an extremely important profession because of the relative isolation of the small communities and the fact that courtship was actually frowned upon.

In ancient Greece, a promnestria was a female matchmaker who conveyed marriage proposals, as well as negotiated the details of the match. Marriages have been arranged in India since the fourth century. And by the 12th century, Jewish communities in Europe began turning to a shadkhan, who would look at background and personalities to set up matches. In return, they were usually paid a percentage of the dowry.

Japan is another country where matchmakers set up meetings between potential mates, known as “Omiai.” Omiai began in the aristocracy in the 12th to 14th centuries and spread to the general public in the Edo period (1603 to 1868).

England's Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901, was also a matchmaker. She attempted to direct Europe's destiny via arranged marriages for her children and grandchildren.

How Does Matchmaking Work?

At The Modern Matchmaker, we start the matchmaking process by discussing your relationship goals and our custom, proven matchmaking process.

The first step of the matchmaking process is to complete a confidential profile. The second step is to schedule an in-person, private consultation with your professional matchmaker to review your profile and discuss ideally what you are looking for in a perfect match. After you become a client, your matchmaker will fine-tune your private database profile and send it to you before they make any introductions.

After you approve your profile, your professional matchmaker will perform a customized search and recommend compatible matches. When both parties agree to meet, your matchmaker will make the introduction so you can schedule a first date.

Your professional matchmaker will encourage you toprovide feedback after each first date, so they know if you want to see the person again. Your feedback also helps them to make successful match recommendations in the future.

Does Matchmaking Really Work?

It absolutely does! Unlike online dating sites, matchmakers offer a personalized process for clients to meet compatible partners that share their interests, values, and lifestyle.

Many people are so frustrated with the lack of success on dating apps, while others are concerned about privacy, that they turn to matchmakers to find their perfect match. It’s like going to a specialist to get what you want. Matchmakers offer more confidential services than dating apps. Many dating app profiles are fake, and some studies warn against the increasing number of catfishers amid the pandemic. It can be easy to be duped by these frauds, so you need to be vigilant when talking to people on an app. Plus, recent studies show that scrolling and swiping can make users feel lonely for various reasons. Being ghosted, not meeting enough matches, and not finding someone you connect with can all take a toll on your mental and emotional health.
